Fostering Emotional Engagement through Meaningful Instructions

Updated: Jul 28

This case study will explore strategies for promoting emotional engagement through meaningful instruction. We will discuss how to address summer learning gaps and identify key concepts that help learners form emotional connections to the content. The analysis will incorporate concepts from meaningful instruction and motivational strategies presented in Chapter 9: "Motivation, Volition, and Performance" of the book Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology by Keller and Deimann.

Meaningful content aligned with goals motivates learning!

Mark Thompson emphasizes that emotional engagement is a crucial factor in effective learning. He explains that when students form an emotional connection with the learning material, they become more invested in the process and are likely to absorb and retain the information better. Meaningful strategies for connecting learning content with students on an emotional level will deliver better results for obtained information through connection to the meaningful instructions. Goals can also be non-specific and even emotionally based, as in wanting to feel good about oneself, having opportunities to enjoy friendly interactions with other people, or being successfully engaged in challenging activities (Keller, 2018, p. 80).

Curiosity arousal learner engagement for summer school!

Our minds strive to resolve curiosity tension by seeking out the missing information that will fill the knowledge gap. This natural desire to make sense of the world and satisfy our curiosity drives us to ask questions, explore new topics, and engage in the learning process. The emotional engagement achieved through purposeful instructions is what ties Karim's TED Talk to Mark Thompson's TED Talk. The ultimate purpose of volition is to help people stay on task and overcome difficulties (Keller, 2018, p. 79). Karim discusses his background and the hardships he overcame with his own volition to get to the point where he is today which is improving education for kids living in underprivileged neighborhoods.

Group based learning motivation for learner engagement!

The idea that knowledge can be broken down into componential facts does not necessarily make knowledge more real than the meaning that an individual creates. Meaning is emergent, not static, and knowledge held by a knower contributes to meaning (Anderson, 2018, p. 73). Emotional engagement in a group setting will also connect each scholar to each other and the content. This will create further motivation for learning engagement. Group based learning in summer school to aid scholars in maintaining what they learned in the school year can be a lead in the education system going forward. When in group-based learning, it also helps motivate each other socially. Learning is predominantly co-operative, allowing for significant differentiation as student groups take on various tasks to contribute to developing collective understanding (Fitzpatrick, 2018, p. 460).

Felecia:

The first learning engagement principal outlined by Reiser and Dempsey in Fostering Emotional Engagement Through Meaningful Instructions is motivation to learn is promoted when the knowledge to be learned is perceived to be meaningfully related to one’s goals. Emotional engagement can improve a learner’s academic performance. Having emotional engagement helps student connect with the material and content while learning. As stated in the book, goals can also be non-specific and even emotionally based, as in wanting to feel good about oneself, having opportunities to enjoy friendly interactions with other people, or being successfully engaged in challenging activities (Keller, 2018, p. 80). This case also discusses volition and its purpose. Volitional strategies can help learners manage negative feelings and emotions.…

Felecia, your comprehensive case study titled "Fostering Emotional Engagement through Meaningful Instructions" offers a critical exploration into the pivotal role of emotional engagement in enhancing the learning experience, which is especially crucial for addressing summer learning gaps (Donahue, 2020). Your strategies for developing a deep emotional connection between learners and their study materials are thoroughly aligned with the educational theories detailed by Keller and Deimann (2013) in *Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology*.

Drawing from my experiences as a coach, I found your observations particularly relatable. This dynamic you describe mirrors the challenges athletes face when they disengage from regular training during the offseason. Similarly, students often struggle to reconnect with academic content after breaks from structured learning…

Well said, Felicia.

I have the privilege of teaching at a Title I school in southern Arizona and this blog post resonates with what I see everyday. That lack of motivation and emotional engagement. In the case of my school, we are bound by the politics of the state and as such, what we teach is predetermined and our students fail to connect to these lessons because they are lacking curiosity and meaningful content. We highly encourage group-based learning, but that only gets us part of the way to the goal. Meaningful content is important, and the Ted Talk with Mark Thompson posed an interesting suggestion in how students that form an emotional connection to the material are more liable…

Fostering Emotional Engagement Through Meaningful Instructions

Concept 1: Motivation to learn is promoted when the knowledge to be learned is perceived to be meaningfully related to one’s goals.

This case study discusses the importance of creating emotional and meaningful content for the learner and how that will impact their understanding and absorption of the material. In the Tedx Talk with Mark Thompson (2017), he discusses how creating an emotional impact to the material effects the learner’s ability to retain the information. This emotional impact may stand out in the learner’s memory and help them retain it long-term.

Creating a thread that connects the student to…

Fostering Emotional Engagement Through Meaningful Instructions:

Felicia,It’s certain that the more passion we have for something, the more we’re willing to invest in mastering that subject. For most leaders and educators, I would say they developed that interest to lead or to teach, either because they’re idolizing a personal hero, or because they’re trying to be who they needed. One thing is absolute, there is a sense of selflessness that becomes part if not all a driving force to reach an altruistic goal. “High-resilience students regard emotional responses as a strength rather than a drawback in schooling.” (Joseph Lobo., 2023.…
