Implementation of Virtual Reality (VR) in Education.

Introduction 

What is Virtual Reality (VR)? 


     Technology has impacted society and education. Its integration has brought with it multiple resources, elements and innovative tools. One of these innovative tools is virtual reality (VR), which is an environment that uses computer technology to create real scenes and objects so that users can feel immersed in it. The environment is visualized using devices called virtual reality glasses or helmets. With (VR) it is possible to immerse yourself in a video game as a character and learn to control our heart or improve the quality of sports training for optimal performance. 



The growing importance of technology in education presents Virtual Reality (VR) as an innovative tool. One of the biggest benefits of virtual reality in education is the ability to create an immersive environment where students can immerse themselves and experience real scenarios in a safe and controlled virtual environment. 



Why is Virtual Reality relevant and how can it improve the learning experience? 

  

     Virtual reality (VR) is relevant in education for several reasons, offering several benefits and opportunities to enhance the learning experience. VR allows students to immerse themselves in virtual environments that simulate real-world situations, this is known as Realistic Immersion and Experiences. It also offers active learning by allowing students to actively participate in the educational process. They can interact with virtual objects, perform simulations, and solve problems, making it easier to understand and retain the material. Virtual reality allows the student to personalize the learning experience. Virtual environments can be adjusted to meet different learning styles, skill levels, and learning paces, making it easy to personalize education. VR is especially useful in fields that require hands-on training, such as medicine, aviation, or engineering. It allows students to practice skills and face challenging situations in a risk-free virtual environment. 



Virtual reality offers capability, which refers to a person's knowledge, skills, and abilities, which determine what they can do. With virtual reality students may be able to enhance the educational experience. Likewise, it offers the opportunity to obtain the resources and information that are necessary so that the tasks given by educators can be carried out. These may include clear statements of objectives, instructional content and tests that match the objectives, availability of tools and equipment, sufficient time to complete the task, and guidelines for completing the work (Keller, J.M and Deimann, M., 2018). 


Educational Objectives when implementing virtual reality. 


      Determining the educational objectives of implementing virtual reality (VR) in a specific educational environment is essential to ensure that the technology is used effectively and promotes the learning process. Virtual reality can add interaction aspects to traditional teaching and learning processes. Thus, the trend of using modern technologies at school and creating a hybrid model can bring a potential for association between the way we learn and the use of technologies, so that the student becomes a critical thinker for solving problems. problems in the school context (Xavier, R. A. C., & Ancioto, A. S. R. 2021). 

      Virtual reality improves Conceptual Understanding, when students explore abstract concepts visually and practically, it facilitates a deeper and more lasting understanding. Increases Motivation and Commitment, in its broadest sense, motivation is a person's desire to pursue a goal or perform a task, which is manifested through the choice of goals and the effort (persistence plus vigor) to pursue the goal. (Keller, J.M and Deimann, M., 2018). It also prepares students for real-world scenarios. Another objective is to offer immediate feedback to students, allowing them to evaluate their performance and correct errors in real time, which contributes to more effective learning. 


Technical Requirements necessary to implement (VR) in the educational environment. 


     There are several technical requirements for the implementation of virtual reality (VR) in an educational environment. These requirements will help ensure efficient operation and optimal user experience. It is important to understand that “innovation is not a specific activity but a process, a long journey or journey that stops to contemplate life in the classrooms, the organization of the centers, the dynamics of the educational community and the professional culture of the teachers.” (Martínez, K. & Torres, L. 2020). Minimum computer requirements for Oculus Rift:

  1. Processor: Intel i3-6100/AMD Ryzen 3 1200, FX4350 or greater

  2. Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti/AMD Radeon RX 470 or greater

  3. Alternative Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 960 4 GB/AMD Radeon R9 290 or greater

  4. Operating System: Windows 10

  5. Memory: 8 GB RAM

  6. USB Ports: 1 x USB 3.0 port

  7. Video Output: Compatible Mini DisplayPort video output (Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter included with Rift S) 

Recommended computer specs for Oculus Rift:

  1. Processor: Intel i5-4590/AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or greater

  2. Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 1060/AMD Radeon RX 480 or greater

  3. Alternative Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 970/AMD Radeon R9 290 or greater

  4. Memory: 16 GB RAM

  5. Operating System: Windows 10

  6. USB Ports: 1 x USB 3.0 port (3x USB for Oculus Rift C1)

  7. Video Output: Compatible DisplayPort

Minimum computer requirements for Valve Index:

  1. Processor: Dual Core with Hyper-Threading

  2. Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 / AMD RX480

  3. Memory: 8 GB RAM

  4. Operating System: Windows 10, SteamOS, Linux

  5. USB Ports: USB 2.0 Port required

  6. Video Output: Available DisplayPort (Version1.2)

Among the technical requirements needed to implement (VR) are the following:

  1. Quality Hardware

  2. VR headsets

  3. Motion Controllers allow users to interact naturally with the virtual environment.

  4. Graphic Hardware must be powerful and compatible with the demands of VR.

  5. Fast Processors

  6. Mobile Device Compatibility

  7. High Speed Internet Connection

  8. VR Development Platforms

  9. Sound System, providing quality headphones for an immersive sound experience, are essential for certain educational contexts.

  10. Uninterrupted Power Supply, these ensure that VR devices have a constant power source to avoid interruptions during learning sessions.

  11. Security Protocols, the latter is important for the protection of user privacy, especially in educational environments where sensitive information is handled.


Conclusion 


      In conclusion, virtual reality (VR) in education represents a powerful and transformative tool that can significantly enrich the learning process. However, virtual reality will not be able to replace the creative mind of educators or students. As a medium that offers immersive and personalized experiences, VR provides unique opportunities to improve the quality and effectiveness of teaching. Although VR requires an investment in hardware, software and training, the potential benefits far outweigh these challenges. As time goes by, science and technology are increasing and it is important to keep pace to continue learning, whether with pencil and paper or with the use of virtual reality (VR).

Motivation to Learn


While Virtual reality can affect the student's ability to learn, many students find the ability of the VR system headsets to be a fundamental learning experience as well as mental clarity and development.  Motivation to learn can be considered intrusive stimuli. (A.
