Learning through animated characters

Brain POP is a website that houses a group of other websites for learners K-8+. There is also a section for learners younger than K-3, called Brain POP, Jr. Brain POP has animated videos that teach about subjects from Basic Addition to Cloud Computing. This is a subscription based program that can be purchased by a school or an individual. Brain POP's main characters are known as Tim and Moby, and they can be seen in every video from one grade level to the next.

Mastery

When learners are provided with the proper tools, skills, and resources, they are likely to be more successful and have the confidence that they truly know what they have learned when they are given an assessment on a subject. Brain POP not only provides learners with information in their chosen subjects, but also gives them practice activities and quizzes to test their knowledge. Animation can enrich students’ mastery of diverse subject matter. Through various lessons and units, educators and students can use simple animation techniques to create visual, animated representations of numerous concepts (Technology Teacher). By using animated characters that the learners can get to know and remain familiar with from one grade level to the next is a great way to keep learners interested and excited for the next lesson.

Meaningful

Learners who are younger often enjoy connecting with animated characters and getting to know them. They are intrigued by the character's personality and want to know what they will be up to next. Animation in learning creates a sense of friendship with the characters on the screen. According to Reiser and Dempsey, "having opportunities to enjoy friendly interactions with people, or being successfully engaged in challenging activities" helps to create feelings of relevance in learners (pg. 80). Animation in learning, through platforms that offer those challenges and interactions help to create meaningful experiences that connect learners to what they are learning. Those moments expand beyond the learning process and helps to build memories that are used when taking a assessments to recall what was being taught.

Self-regulation

When learners are have stress free learning environments, they are more naturally susceptible to curiosity. Learners can function under a certain level of stress that can be helpful when problem solving, but too much stress will deter them from the task at hand. According to Donald Norman, “Positive emotions are critical to learning, curiosity, and creative thought.” By using design to support positive emotions in learners, we’re creating an environment that better supports their learning. One way to do that is through aesthetics, and in fact this very principle plays a part in usability (Peters). Animation not only gives the learner something positive to look forward to, but can create a bit of that "positive stress" to encourage problem solving and improve their critical thinking skills. This emotional regulation will connect learners to learning in a positive way.

In conclusion, animation in learning promotes mastery in learning, creates meaningful connections to learning and allows learners to self-regulate under stress. Animation in learning, using characters that learners become familiar with has often been used for several years, even on children's TV programming. Using similar animations in classrooms creates successful outcomes and has positive impacts on the learning environment.

LEARNING THROUGH ANIMATED CHARACTERS

As a parent of a college age daughter, I can remember like it was just yesterday, when she loved to look at Little Einstein’s and Dora the Explorer. It was in these animated series that children learned about things in the ocean and other countries cultures. Learning through animated characters either in the form of 2D or 3D animation, helps present information, concepts, or ideas to learners in a visually appealing and engaging way. This approach has proven to be an effective method for conveying information in an easy-to-understand and memorable format.

Animated characters such as those on the Magic School Bus help explain complex ideas and concepts, as well as to provide interactive experiences for…

In education, learner engagement is the topic of the conversation. Administration is always referring to teachers for ideas on how they provide student engagement in their classrooms. This is because so many educators struggle with keeping students engaged in the lessons for more than 10 minutes at a time. Finding supplemental resources to help balance the lecture and the engagement is something that takes some getting used to. One tool that helps bring balance to the instructional time is BrainPop. BrainPop is used by a wide range of age groups according to an article written by Attard, “I have used this website within several primary classrooms and at a tertiary level with both undergraduate and post-graduate students and have found…

Curiosity

Teachers have used PowerPoint, textbooks, and various other interactive strategies, such as YouTube and i-Ready, to engage the minds of students. BrainPop is also an interactive website with specific characters that house all kinds of topics starting at the kindergarten level. BrainPop allows students to satisfy their curiosity. The videos are fun, and they are incredibly detailed. They use headings, text features, and questions for the students to follow along with. There have been many times in class when a student asks me a question that I truthfully may not know the answer to. BrainPop allows them to have the power to close any gaps in their understanding (Reiser & Dempsey, 2018). While students can target their epistemic curiosity,…

Learners anticipate and experience satisfying outcomes to a learning task.

According to Reiser and Dempsey (2018), it is usually best, with regard to maintaining motivation to learn, to use feedback that is informational instead of controlling. Brainpop uses feedback during the lesson more so than control. When learning their new task students enjoy the animation as this is what keeps them engaged. They somehow become best pals with the characters and know if they are unable to master the content, they will receive some sort of redirect or coaching along the way from their pals. Repetition is a proven strategy used in education to achieve mastery. These programs often use repetition. If the content is delivered over the course …

Gamification

Through the use of gaming technology in the learning environment, children are not only able to learn something new, but they also get to have fun at the same time. Furthermore, by making them an active part of the curriculum, it is easier for students to retain the information since it is presented to them in a fun and engaging manner. “As students are active in the learning process, they also have to learn from their interaction with others, and through realistic learning, students will be able to transfer the knowledge acquired. In this way, two fundamental characteristics of learning are promoted, such as the sociability of learning, which explains that social interaction and interactivity are necessary for…
