Microsoft Teams for education: the new learning platform

During the pandemic many universities, schools, and government agencies had to quickly pivot to an online virtual learning platform. The impact of online training has altered the way we teach our students. My university had to transitioned from an in-residence course to a virtual platform. In the beginning we used WebEx and Zoom but due to limited capabilities we soon switched over to Microsoft Teams for Education. Using MS Teams was a bit challenging at first because no one knew how it worked and how we would deliver our training to our students. MS Teams offers a variety of features that makes it easy to use on a regular basis. Schools and agencies can customize the MS Teams template for their courses. I can collaborate with colleagues, students and faculty. As well as create assignments, share files and upload documents. Also, there are apps that are functional for the classroom.

Some of the features that MS Teams use are assignments, screensharing, chats, whiteboard, and the raise your hand features for participants. As well as group discussion and breakout room features.

I choose to talk about the three principles listed below from Reiser, & J.V Dempsey :

Motivation through Meaningful Goals

MS Teams can keep the students on track using the Insight App. Insight is a feature that provides real time analysis of students’ progress and activities within the course. Teachers are provided with data that is tailored to the student to ensure their emotional, social and academic needs are being met. The knowledge lets the teacher focus their time on areas needed for improvement to help the student thrive.

Motivation through Curiosity

Using MS Teams has been great for faculty in teaching our course. Currently in my PMT 4010 vilt we have a total of 42 students enrolled in our five-week program. One way we use curiosity is having guest speakers to come into the course and have open discussion on a particular subject. Recently we had a LTG Marion speak about how to define leadership in the military. The students all had their cameras on and used the raise your hand and chat functions to engage with each other and the guest speaker.

Motivation through Satisfying Outcomes

Creating a positive learning environment reliant on the faculty and students. Their relationship is a great way that MS Teams provides this is through the reinforcement of the positive feedback given with interactive whiteboard features. The whiteboard feature lets the students interact with each other and interact with the teacher. Another great feature is the polling option that lets the teachers create questions and then send them to the students to provide feedback about the session. Another great way to provide satisfying outcomes for the students in at the end of the course.

Overall, since using MS Teams for vilt learning it has proven to be a great platform for our courses that we provided through our university.

Adaptability

The pandemic created a platform for programs like Microsoft Teams and Zoom to thrive. The inability to meet live led to schools and corporations having to navigate online. This also requires these platforms to adapt and add new innovations to stay competitive (Baker & Phirangee, 2021). One characteristic that has lead to companies continuing to use virtual meeting platforms is it is open and accessible to all. This allows for two separate organizations from anywhere in the world to collaborate in real time.

Companies also are required to make content accessible in real time. This content includes video recordings, supporting documentation and facilitator contact information. Participants being home based has lead to more screen time. Leadership is being asked…

Both anticipation and experience are essential.

External and internal elements contribute to feelings of satisfaction with one's achievements and avoidance of improper feelings of disappointment when one does not achieve success (Reiser, Dempsey, 2018). Collaboration between teachers and students is made possible through the use of Microsoft Teams in the classroom. Through the requirement of conversation among students, collaborative learning alters the dynamics of the classroom environment (Elstad, 2012). This collaborative learning can be enhanced by including motivational strategies such as anticipating and experiencing rewarding outcomes (Reiser & Dempsey, 2018). Predicting that the students would collaborate and exert some degree of control over their learning experience helps keep the students interested. It is a terrific technique to inspire kids because…

The shift to online class and remote work has really thrown the world a curveball but Microsoft Teams has emerged as an invaluable tool to bring coworkers as well as teachers and their students back together at a time where we must stay apart for the health and safety of our communities. I, personally, have used Teams in both remote work and remote learning and I cannot think of a software program that is quite as versatile to fit both the needs of the classroom and the corporate/professional working world.

Simulating a “Close-To-Normal” Setting Using Teams and Regaining Motivation Lost by Remote Work and Learning

In no way shape or form is this “new normal” normal but coming together for…

Microsoft Teams: A Cognitive Learning Strategy

Motivation refers sometimes to an end state but sometimes also to the means through which that state is determined, and more generally to management of the cognitive processes that govern learners’ choice, effort, and persistence. Cognitive learning strategies are often understood as ways to control the learners’ cognitive processes: “A learning strategy refers to cognitive processes performed by a learner at the time of learning that is intended to improve learning” (Mayer 2003, p. 362). Microsoft Teams has given each user the ability to communicate to each other in a different medium. The usual choice was in-person and through the phone. Microsoft Teams has combined the two in a seamless medium. Typically, one would…

Adaptive Intelligent Web– Based Teaching and Learning

Distributed technologies take advantage of computational environments to bring students and teachers together, either synchronously or asynchronously, in ways that bring all the advantages of face-to-face collaboration, along with the augmented capabilities of computer mediation, analysis, search of online resources, and faithful recording of all interactions (Elstad, 2012). Microsoft Teams is one of these learning platforms. When the pandemic started, people around the world were scrambling to find the best or the easiest ways to get their one in person classrooms, online. You touch on how it was difficult transition because no one had prior knowledge on the software, but how it had many of the features that were useful. Motivation declined once…
